Jim Briscoe Memorial Game 2008

The third memorial game will be taking place at the gorgeous ground of Chesterfield this year - the home of at least four Derbyshire County Games in 2008.
The game; which has been contested in good hearted yet competetive fashion will once again take the format of an all day fixture with an 11.00am start and all are very much invited to come out and enjoy the day.
If you are intending to travel to Chesterfield at all on the 27th June and wish to be included for catering purposes(at no charge), please contact via the website.
The team is shaping up nicely and our Captain, Adie Passey will hopefully secure the trophy once again after us being taught a sharp lesson last year. Chesterfield and Quarndon both play in the Derbyshire Premiere League and will undoubtedly make life as difficult once again but we shall look forward to hopefully giving the fixture a decent turn out and some good quality cricket to match.
Team so far;

Paul Jackson
Jamie Coleman
Ross Briscoe
Tim Briscoe

9-Gentlemen in waiting

A few of us had discussions recently in trying to re-create the famous 'Jedd' pikkie of Nine Gentlemen in Waiting.
Watch the Hot News section for details of the venture unfolding.
There are also discussions underway to hold a Twenty First anniversary Reg Thatcher award complete with in depth interviews and mixed with all that went before for an evenings viewing later in the year.
We require nominations for the all time Reggie???
Club Clothing.
For those who have paid their money for orders. The clothing will be collected tomorrow and left at the club for collection this Saturday.
Many thanks.

Club Disco 3rd May.
Many thanks to all those of you who put up the effort to 'dress for the occasion' and make the night a good get together. Although the turn out was a little on the low side, all those who attended made for a good evening. Also thanks to Tricky Dikkie for providing the music. A long and illustrious career awaits.
New Season - Availability
So; we now move into the gorgeous month of May which was unfortunately so wet last year, with new hope and vigour as the League Season gets underway.
Changes have been forced upon us through the loss of key personel and other problems for the moment(see WCC COmmittee section) but we are in good hands nonetheless.
To help make the engine run as smoothe as is possible we require all playing members to make their availability known as soon as they can. Please let the Captains, Committee or indeed, Mal know so that your name is in the book by Monday evening. It is extremely difficult to secong guess availability and the knock on effect and confusion it eventually causes along with that of players simply not turning up is devastating.
As we need to run four teams which we did so regularly last season, it is even more imperative that selection is made as easy as possible.
With this in kind, everyone is wished the very best of success and may you score loads of runs, take loads of wickets and secure as many points to make the season a successful one.
Matt Ferguson
We have very sad news to report the death of Matt Ferguson.Matts life was tragically cut short in a car accident following which he died in hospital on the 14th April.
Matt, a Bishops Tachbrook player had first started to practise and then play a few games for us towards the end of last season. His funeral which is to be a celebration of his life, will be held at Oakley Woods at 3.00pm on the 24th April.
Warwick Cricket Club extends its condolences to Matts family and friends.
Up The Pole
Discussions at the last Sports Club committee meeting confirmed our request to place a Flag Pole adjacent to the scorebox.
There are many members who would like this to happen and I am seeking your support through the website.
If you are at all interested in helping fund this venture please mail using the club address so that we can put the details to our committee.
The idea would be to place a pole and flag with Club Logo and colours next to the Scorebox.

Nets and Fixtures.
Please refer to 'TEAMS' section for details.
New Club Captain
Very many congratulation to our 2008 1st X1 and club Captain, Jamie Coleman.
Jamie has skippered the 1st team Sunday side of late and will relish the challenge that lies ahead for this coming season.
Jamie has a wealth of experience around him and no less quality and given a favorablesummer, we can hopefully be a force to reckoned with in our Division One challenge.

English cricket gets £30m boost
The ECB plan has the unanimous backing of the first-class counties
English cricket chiefs have handed the sport a £30m cash injection in a bid to develop the club game and improve facilities around the country.
Among the plans Giles Clarke, chairman of the English and Wales Cricket Board, is keen to implement is the erection of floodlights at every county ground.
The move is designed to give fans more opportunities to see matches live.
Money will also be made available to improve coaching, ground drainage and access to the game in schools.
Funded primarily by increases in broadcasting revenue, sponsorship and gate receipts over recent years, it is the biggest cash injection ever into the English game.
"This is a major commitment to invest in all areas of cricket," said Clarke. "Cricket in England and Wales has never seen this level of financial support.
"Our resources are being targeted to build the continuing affection of the nation with its summer sport and to give people of all ages and walks of life the chance to play and watch in the best surroundings."
Of the total sum, £9m will be earmarked for floodlighting at all county grounds, £6m will go towards drainage at international venues and eventually all counties.
Clarke told BBC Radio 4 that more than £14m in grants will be given to more than 2,000 community clubs.
Explaining the desire for more floodlit cricket, he claimed England would enjoy more success on the international stage if their players were used to day-night matches.
"We feel we need considerably more experience playing day-night games," he said.
"Secondly, the spectators have considerably greater ease coming to watch cricket in the early and late evening.
"If we've got floodlights, we are in a position to do that."
Big Mac Challenge
We have a new challenge. Smithy believes he can demolish 10-Big Macs in an hour.A certain Australian also had the deluded belief that he too could chomp his way through them. A crowd gathered at Mac's at the top of parade but alas, it was to no avail for our poor antipodian collegue as he hit the wall on his eight burger.
Can Steven do it?
We'll find out after the first game of the season.
New Players very Welcome
We are constantly striving to increase our already excellent membership and the quality of players so we would invite you to contact us if you are interested in joing this fast growing and forward thinking club.
Your message will be treated with the utmost respect and we will reply quickly.
Next season; 2008 promises to be a massive year with us running 'Four', yes four league sides plus a new set-up in the youth department.
We also have a great Sports Club set-up with excellent social facilities complete with Sat.TV.
So why not give it a try? Even if it years since you have played cricket it is still a great game and a great environment in those lazy summer days and evenings to enjoy.

VICE PRESIDENTS.
The club is always looking for ways of increasing revenue and the number of people watching on Saturdays so we are considering forming a Vice Presidents Club.
This has been carried out very successfully in Rugby circles and many other established Cricket Clubs.
The idea would be to invite many of the more 'Mature' menbers and include as many ex-players, friends and family into the fold by way of an annual supplementary subscription. This would gaurantee invitation to a day out at the club with dinner, tea and drinks. A special edition Club Tie would be given to would-be members together with Blazer badge.
Obviously the intention is to make a great day out of watching the club as well as drilling up revenue.
If anyone is provisionally interested in this idea, please contact us and give us your thoughts on how we may progress it.
We will have to set an age limit of sorts - The veteran age limit withing Rugby circles is generally 35yrs.
Repeat..............This will be available to all members and friends!!!
Thank -You
Chairman: Mike Wilson.
Can I take this opportunity to wish all players, club officials, friends and site readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
I sense that 2008 will be a definitive and important season for Warwick Cricket Club. We have new Saturday league captains, entering 4 league teams, increasing junior teams to 4 within the introduction of U17s and the club trying to achieve Clubmark status. Player of the Year 2007 Tim Marrion replaces Dave Griffith as 1st team captain with Clubman of the Year 2007 Dave White replacing Simon Hathaway. Owen Griffiths retains the 3rd team duties and stalwart Tony Sarson takes a 4th team into the leagues for the first time. Allin-all very exciting times ahead.

The following is a copy of the speech made at the recent club dinner for those of you who wish to take time to view it and those who were not present.
Chairman: Mike Wilson
Before we get on to the presentations I would like to say a few words about our clubs achievements in a rain ravaged summer.
Overall the Club has enjoyed another successful year which will be reflected in the awards we present later.
But, how do we measure this intangible thing called success?
My thoughts are that it is not necessarily solely in the 1st team achievements but in the progress in the fielding of 4 teams on a Saturday, 2 teams on a Sunday plus the U15s, U13s and U11s playing in their respective leagues, and in no small way, the camaraderie that exists throughout the club.
On the playing side the heady success of promotion in the last two years for the 1st team would have been difficult to maintain but that should not detract from their achievements given the quality of the opposition in Div. 1. They played 22, winning 5, losing 7, drawing 6 with 4 abandoned.
The loss of super Dave for several matches and players out of touch (was this in no small part due to the lack of hard, true wickets?) also contributed. 2008 will see this young side progress further.
Dave is stepping down after captaining the club for 3 years and to two successive promotions. I think it appropriate that it would be fitting if you show your appreciation for his achievements in the normal way. Applause !!!
The unbeaten 2nd team under Simon Hathaway are to be congratulated on their promotion. They played 22,winning12, tied 1,drew 4, abandoned 5 which reflects the depth of talent within the club coupled with the consistency of a settled side.
Given that they managed to snatch a tie from the jaws of victory is testament to their overall achievements.
Simon is also stepping down after 3 years and I ask you to show your appreciation of that dedication. Applause!!!!
The 3rd team under Owen dogsbody Griffith had notable success in finishing 2nd plus the thrill of beating Leek Wootton in our home match. (I leave you to tell me how long ago they were playing the 1st team!) Their record was played 16, winning 5, losing 2, drawing 6 and 3 abandoned.
The club also recognises the achievements of Tony Sarson in regularly fielding a 4th team with all the difficulties of dealing with a wide range of talents, travelling many miles to matches with a high percentage of youngsters along with organising a ground to play on. He also, along with another elder statesman of the club, managed to get one game abandoned when the opposition captain picked up the stumps and stormed off. Something along the lines of you cant win by any other means was heard ringing around the Wythall ground
Jamie and Adie struggled with availability on a Sunday, possibly because of us turning out 4 sides on a Saturday, but are to be congratulations on achieving some notable victories.
Following on we must pay tribute and thank a few people behind the scenes who enable you, the players, to enjoy just turning up, playing cricket and having a drink afterwards. These are not in any particular order but can I start with our tea ladies Claire (I saw Tadge with a pinny on as well) and Jackie for their efforts in consistently turning out high quality fare for the home and nomadic 3rd and 4th teams even at short notice with a cheerful grin when Tony inadvertently forgot to tell them he was at home!
The club wish them to accept these bouquets with our grateful thanks and appreciation.
We have fantastic facilities at the club but we must thank Denis, Tadge and Claire for their work on the ground and in providing consistently high quality wickets and surroundings, helped by our two grasscutters Mal and son. We achieved the highest mark in the league for clubs who do not have a resident groundsman, which is testament to the hard work and organisation of the above people -- so very well done to all. Also Simon and Dave White must be thanked for their help in stepping in when needed to cover holidays and to provide extra hands when required.
Our magnificent highrise new sightscreens were the result of much hard work from Dave White, Roy Briscoe and their band of helpers. Many thanks.
On a personal level can I say thank you to a few people. Simon and Dave, who were every ready to help me, when necessary, with the renovations to the artificial wicket, and also in getting the nets (including the mobile net) into working order. They were also there, helping out, when there was work to do on getting the new garage sorted out.
They always say that if you want a job done urgently give it to a busy person, so who should I ask to help me out with the Juniors but our resourceful secretary, 3rd team capt. and general dogs body Owen. Thanks mate for your cheerful and uncomplaining help. Also to Jamie Harding and Steve Moger for running the U11 practices and league games and to Danny, Dave,Rob and Simon for scoring in various junior games. The list would not have been complete without a thank you to our resident barman Lord Qualcast of Warwick as he has been crowned with his unfailingly good humour, cheerfulness , helpfulness and who was ever ready to put me on the right road if I forgot to organise balls, stumps or kit for the juniors. His only failing is to realise that calling the chairman at 8 am is a bit of a no-no especially as he is retired! I did offer to call him at 11pm but the answer is unprintable!
Also I would like to thank our retiring 1st team skipper Dave for his quiet nudges and comments in guiding me through my first year as Chairman.
The website is proving an unqualified success and our thanks to Roy Briscoe for his work in getting it up and running with the depth and wealth of information that it provides to the interested and casual observer.
Finally, Can I thank Tony for his work in sorting out the menus, monies and organisation for this do.
In conclusion can I say 2008 is destined to be a very important season for the Club with major changes in the top personnel, entry of the 4th team into the league structure, running of 4 youth teams in their respective leagues and working towards obtaining Clubmark status, but I believe with the helpers/volunteers within the club we will go on to achieve more success.
NB.
It should also not go unoticed and un appreciated that Mike, himself has put a lot of time and energy into his first season of Chairmanship. Often riding against the wind; particularly with the problems in getting the youth section up and running, he has constantly courted help from club members and been a vital link in all the improvements that we see at our club. Mike is to be congratulated on a fine year.
